As we in Narberth face yet another round of revisions to the redistricting plan, we again have no specific agenda to put forth before the redistricting board. While we all agree that the second proposal is unacceptable as it has torn our close knit community in half, no one seems to have proposed an alternative to take its place. Without a clear agenda, we again will be at the mercy of the redistricting board and any other community that is able to come together.
There have been several meetings since the second redistricting proposal but not one has produced a plan that the community can get behind. Of course not all of us will agree with one universal plan, but by not proposing one as a unified community, we have no one to blame but ourselves when we don’t get what we want.
As such, I propose that we go back to the first redistricting plan and suggest an amendment to it as a solution to keep Narberth together. By moving Narberth kids to Bala Cynwyd Middle School and then on to Lower Merion High School, we solve the issue of tearing the community apart and allow walking. Likewise the kids from Penn Valley (Penn Valley and Haverford) could move to Welsh Valley and then Harrington. This keeps our children with the same friends from 6th grade through 12th grade and at the same time keeps South Narberth together with Merion students.
If you agree with this proposal, PLEASE get involved. I will have a petition for signatures on my front door until November 6th, when I will turn it into the redistricting committee. If you don’t advocate for your children and your community, no one else will!
